Выступление Р. Эмерсона [Emerson, Ralph Waldo] перед членами братства "Фи-бета-каппа" [Phi Beta Kappa] Гарвардского университета [Harvard University] в 1837. Уже в год публикации было названо О. Холмсом [Holmes, Oliver Wendell] "Декларацией независимости американского интеллектуала" ["America's intellectual Declaration of Independence"]. Эмерсон заявил, что американцы должны в своих научных и философских изысканиях опираться на опыт американской жизни и собственные силы, а не ограничиваться рамками схоластического теоретического наследия Европы
